TRACK AND FIELD

BY ALICE WEBBER     March 2020

Track and Field is coached by Mr. Fields on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 to 5:30PM. You do not need to try out, just join. The track part means running, and the field part means different sporting activities whiles running around a track. Some different sports you complete in may be jumping over bars and throwing discs of metal or plastic. You may also do an event called shot put which involves, as stated by worldathletics.org, "The shot, a metal ball, [which is] is put with one hand. The aim is to put it as far as possible from a seven-foot diameter circle." Also as said by worldathletics.org, "Athletes will commonly throw four or six times per competition. In the event of a tie, the winner will be the athlete with the next-best effort." Some famous track and field athletes are Usain Bolt, Jesse Owens, and Ashton Eaton. Track and field events are in the Summer Olympics and have been since the birth of the modern Olympics.

CROSS COUNTRY

BY ALICE WEBBER       November 2019

Do you like running? Do you like racing against another schools? Do you have time after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays? If you said yes to the questions above, then you should join cross country next year. Cross Country is a running team where you practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:00 to 5:15. It requires lots of effort, practice, and a willingness to stick with it.

The county meet will be on December 7th. Mr. Porter and Mr. Skoretz help coach the team. Cross Country is open to any grade level and there are no tryouts. You need to have laced running shoes as you will be running around the school during practice. The activity bus stays until 5:30 and if it doesn't pass your neighborhood then you will need a ride home.

Track and Cross Country are often confused as same thing. The difference is that track is run on a flat allotted area while cross country is run on uneven surfaces, sometimes in mud or dirt. The MKMS Track team practices in January.

Natalie Talbert, a sixth grader enjoying cross country so far is enjoying being part of the team. "I like it because I have a more diverse friendship now, and I can hang out with my friends while getting exercise."

BY ALICE WEBBER     September 2019

For many students at Markham, volleyball is a fun, interactive way to get exercise outside of P.E. class. It consists of spiking, serving and setting, and involves team effort and participation. Girls volleyball practices are on Tuesday and Thursday at 7:15 to 8:50 AM and boys' practices will also be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays but at 4:00 to 5:30 PM. Rec league practices will be on Mondays and Fridays at 4:00 to 5:30 PM. The tournament is on October 26th. The games will rotate home games with boys then girls each game and are held on Wednesday afternoons. The PTSA will be selling snacks and drinks at the games. Also, any student with their ID will get in free and if they do not have it, they will have to pay $1.  Parents will have to pay $3.

Sixth grader Paige Lehman plays on the JV Girls team and has been enjoying the season. "There's lots of nice people on the team."

Alice Krueger is playing in the Rec League, and when asked what's something you are really enjoying so far?" she responded, "The coaches are really kind, and they are helpful with anything I'm struggling with."

Tent Sims is an eighth grader on Varsity and he responded to the same question by saying, "I like having friends on the team and I also like blocking."
