THESPIANS

BY VRITI SHAH      November 2019

Thespians is a competition for 7th and 8th graders that are interested in the performing arts. The competition was on November 8th and 9th and was held at Lake Mary High School. Ms. Bennett and Mrs. Antmann are the directors of the troupe who will help you prepare for the competition.

To get into the troupe you must audition. Not everyone gets to be selected for the troupe. Before auditioning, you need to make sure that you have good grades, you have time to rehearse on your own time, and have time to rehearse after/before school. The auditions this year were held on September 16. No one can join the troupe after the audition dates but students can audition next year.

In the competition there are 5 groups: monologues, solo musical, duet acting, small group musical, and ensemble acting. Some kids in Drama 3 are performing Shakespeare's Macbeth in Thespians as well for Markham's One Act. Mrs. Antmann coaches singing and Ms. .Bennett coaches acting.

The judges have 4 categories to judge the performers by. These categories include, poor, good, excellent, and superior. For performers to get to the next competition, they must receive an excellent or a superior from the judges. Macbeth, the one act that Markham Woods Middle Schools Drama 3 performed, got a superior. Judges can also give a Critics Choice award to what their favorite act was. Macbeth also got a critics choice award.

Natalee Gerboc, a 7th grader who is performing in Thespians, was asked, "What are you most nervous for when it comes to thespians?" She replied with, "I have a small group musical, so I'm scared that I'm either going to have a voice crack or I'm going to forget my lyrics. Although, something that excites me about Thespians, is that I get to work together with my friends."

Genesis Hatcher, a 7th grader, who is performing in Thespians as well was asked, "Are you nervous about performing in Thespians? What other feelings do you have about thespians? How do you deal with nervousness before performing? She responded with, "I am nervous to perform because I feel I would mess up in the middle of my performance. I am excited because this is a new experience and I can't wait to see what there is to come. To deal with nervousness before performing, I go into my inner self and imagine that I'm on stage and just practice in my head or maybe do some voice exercises."

Thespians is a fun event that is perfect for anyone, in 7th or 8th grade, that is interested in the arts. To be in thespians you must be responsible and able to put in all the practice. If you checked off all these things, next year you should audition for Thespians!

READ TO FEED

Changing lives one page at a time

BY ALICE WEBBER         October 2019

The Read to Feed program that 13 students here at Markham Woods created helps raise money for children in poverty around the world. This amazing organization was started early August 2019 and is run by Ekansh Rastogn. He wants to make the world a better place by popularizing literature and trying to raise money to help feed children in poorer communities. The group will be selling books to raise money. When he lived in Texas his friends would ask "hey what book are you reading" and now that he lives in Florida, all his friends talk about video games. He wants to put that aside and make everyone read a book!

He started this operation when he went to India over the summer and saw kids pulling food out of a trash can and getting excited over discovering an apple. He felt that he needed to do something. So, he made a PowerPoint and showed it to Ms. Suecof. Now the organization is started.

Their main goal is to make their company big in Markham and then move on to other schools. Ekansh wants to help children all over the world for as long as he lives. Ekansh says, "There's kids everywhere so do help everywhere!"

Do you like art? What about creativity? If these things both apply to you, the Art Club might be the club for you! Art Club is held in Room 3-007 and is sponsored by Mrs. Gendron. The club meets every Wednesday morning at 8:30.
You might be wondering, "What do you do in art club?" Well, you create personal works of art, participate in art contests, create scenery for drama, and paint murals. One big project the students in Art Club enjoyed was making a "starry night" mural for the 8th grade dance.
Arisha Arvat, a 6th grader, enjoys the club because "it has really fun art and you meet new friends."  Isabella Cantano, a 7th grader, said, "I joined Art Club because I like painting and there's a nice teacher!"  Currently, there are 11 members, and any student can join! You don't need to buy or bring any supplies, just your creativity. If this interests you, you should "Van Gogh" sign up for Art Club!
